3 Drama Credit Sequences

After some research and analysis that we have done in the previous days, we are now about to research, analyze, and discuss 3 amazing film credit sequences of the drama genre. I am excited about this project, especially this part since I love doing research and learning more and more about this interesting genre. I also love how every detail included in the opening scene is detailed and carefully placed in its place, still, I find it very interesting how it is up for interpretation and analysis in various ways. The credits should include important titles such as director, producer, writer, cinematographer, editor, and major actors.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

The film credit sequence starts by introducing the logo of the merger of Fox Film Corporation and the Twentieth Century Pictures, "20th. century fox" which has become very iconic and easy to identify in films. Then, the logo of "Regency", which is the film production company. Then the name of another production company is given, which is "GK". Then, the film's title is given. As the opening part progresses, the names of the main characters are given. Then the person who was in charge of the casting, costume design, the executive music producers, music supervisors, co-producer, editor, production designer, director of photography, executive producer, and producer. Finally, the creator of the story, who did the screenplay, and the director. When analyzing and discussing this credit sequence, I would say it was very well developed and distributed during the 2 minutes of the opening part of the film. I would say the font size was well proportioned, as well as a white color which combined with the aesthetic of the scenes given, and the color font also makes it easy to read and identify.

I would say that the names are well distributed since there is a perfect amount of time in between the names given, which I think doesn't saturate the viewers with info. Unlike some films, these credits were not read out loud by a narrator, which I think was a very clever decision since a very loud song was playing in the background. I consider that this credit opening sequence was very captivating and was themed with the story's colorimetry and style.

Fly Me To The Moon (2024)

The credit sequence of the film does not include a logo or an image to identify the movie's production company at first compared to other films. It primarily includes the name of the person responsible for the casting, visual effects supervisor, music, music supervisor, costume designer, editor, production designer, director of photography, executive producer, producers, where the story is inspired, screenplay, director, still, the name title was not provided. When analyzing this credit sequence, I happened to discover that the different names provided on the screen were hard to notice, I believe this happened since the font's size is very small and the white color makes it a little hard to notice. Still, its style was well paired with the colorimetry of the different scenes, which had a lot of pastel colors. I would also say that the names and information of the credits provided were well placed on the screen in the bottom half which didn't obstruct the scenes happening. The names were provided also at the right pace, meaning there was a nice amount of time in between each name, mostly when there were a lot of conversations or movement going on in the scenes.

I also believe that that decision was made for the audience to have an amount of time to notice and read the credits while being on track and engaged with the story being presented and introduced. To conclude, I would say that the credits were well presented and paired with the film's aesthetic and style with many minimalistic details so it wouldn't saturate the audience, still, I found it uncommon that in the first minutes of the film, the title wasn't provided.

Call Me by Your Name (2017)

The opening credit scene starts by presenting the different contributors in a yellow font and black background. The credits provided are Memento Films International, RT Features, and M.Y.R.A Entertainment. A co-production of La Cinéfacture and a Frenesy Film. There is an association with Morato Pane s.p.a and Faram 1957 s.p.a, Armando De Angelis s.r.l, Cinefïnance Italia s.r.l, under tax credit laws. Association with Water's End Productions, Regione Lombardia, Regione Lazio. Then the main actors' names are given: Armè Hammer, Timothée Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel, Victoire du Bois, Vanda Caprido, Antonio Rimoldi, Elena Bucci, Marco Sgrosso. The casting was by Stella Sarino 1st AD Dominique Delany. Music supervisor Robin Urdang and music consultant Gerry Gershman. The film's opening credit sequence is in a yellow font, which seems like a handwritten test style. The information and names are given in advance at the right pace.

The text size and font are proportional since the background shows different European figures and drawings, which foreshadow an important topic and setting of the film. Therefore, the text does not interfere with the aesthetic and style of the introduction part.

In conclusion, all of the opening credit sequences of the film cohesively embody proportionally the aesthetic and style of what can be shown in the background with the font size and color. The text is also proportionated well when it comes to the pace of time since it won't saturate the first seconds with information, instead, they are all well distributed and easy to digest by the audience.

3 Film Openings for Chosen Genre

Today we are starting our second week of this Portfolio Project which I am so excited about. As I mentioned in the previous blog, I want this project to be great and group work is always a great way to expand ideas and opinions, for the Project to be great. Therefore, between my classmates: Fatima, Santina, and Julia, with whom I have done previous projects for this class and the communication is always wonderful, we decided, sharing many ideas, that we would like our Film Opening genre to be "drama", mostly centered on teenage stories. Therefore, I am so excited to research, analyze, and discuss 3 film openings of this incredible genre.

Drama

Drama is "intended to portray life or character or to tell a story usually involving conflicts and emotions through action and dialogue. A state, situation, or series of events involving interesting or intense conflict of forces."

Some of its characteristics include

Major Conflict: In dramatic films, the protagonist is forced to step outside of their comfort zone by conflict. The choices the character makes during their journey determine everything. The plot advances and eventually defines the characters based on their responses and reactions to conflict. Usually, the characters end up in trouble because of their bad decisions.
Growing plots: Dramas have deep plots that emphasize the focus on characters' choices and the slow growth of conflicts. Slowly increasing tension lets characters deal with complex problems. Conflicts frequently occur from their imperfections or past, and their actions bring the plot connected.
Characters: A character embodies a certain personality, set of values, and beliefs. The viewpoint that the audience identifies with and is at the center of the conflict is that of the story's protagonist. The protagonist is in conflict with the antagonist. The antagonist is often seen as a villain. The antagonist may, however, be nature, an idea, or even the protagonist working against themselves. There could be an internal or external conflict with the main character.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

The Opening scene starts with the sound of someone typing on a typewriter. There is a black background, Then a string melody starts to sound and lights are given of what could be the point of view of someone in a car. Then the song's lyrics start and more of the drive road and tunnel are visible. After a couple of seconds, the lights go off and more instruments and serene sounds are introduced. Suddenly we see a boy who is writing in his bedroom to his friend a letter. We hear his thoughts and what he is writing, he talks to him about how he doesn't want this "friend" to get to know him, he just wants to know that this "friend" that he is writing to exists. Then he walks into the living room, where his parents watch TV and ignore him. He then explains they pretend he is invisible. When analyzing this film, I can see that the main character is not introduced at the moment the film starts, some seconds are given to show the driveway and a lot of lights that seem like flashing lights, this could represent voltage, danger, and loss of control as the main conflict of the story.

The velocity of the car might mean growing up or the desire to leave a situation, finally, the lack of colors might represent the monotony of life. Then the main character is introduced, he doesn't directly talk, which might indicate he is an introvert, he writes to his friend in a paper letter which seems unusual for his age, it also seems as if he doesn't know exactly who is he talking to, representing his loneliness. Finally, the fact that he goes to see his parents and they ignore him might show again how he feels out of place and ignored by others. The lights when the main character appears are always low and dark, enhancing a sense of dramatic sadness and loneliness in the main character's life. I believe this opening scene is very unusual, still very engaging, and relatable for many teenagers since it shows the reality of many young individuals and their feelings towards themselves and their lives.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

The Opening scene starts with a song with a fast rhythm. After that, we see a crosswalk of what seems to be a school, there are a lot of cars and movement, suddenly a red car stops right in front of the camera and someone walks out, we see that this person is wearing a colorful pair of Converse shoes, which might indicate they are a teenager and a student of this school. The camera tilts up and we see it is a girl wearing a very colorful outfit, and walking really fast. The song's lyrics start. She walks around many school corridors, where more students around her can be seen. Then she enters an empty classroom, where only the teacher is visible, she quickly sits on a chair in front of the teacher to talk. She suddenly says that she wants to "kill herself" and doesn't know who else to talk to. She then starts to say some options of how she could do it but she is confused because she doesn't really know how it works. When analyzing this film, I can see that the main character is introduced very rapidly. I can see that the film might be very chaotic since at first there is a lot of movement, loud background music, and multiple variations of shots.

Then by the way that the main character dresses, I can assume that she is a rebellious teenage girl, and by the way she walks fast and her facial expressions, she seems preoccupied with something. The first conversation that takes place is with her teacher, which at first, by her strong statement might be shocking and confusing, however by the way she seems naive about her point, the dramatic scene is sort of comical and even relatable for some teenagers. Still, by the way, she talks, I can infer that she is a teenager who has a lot of stressful situations that she might be experiencing, as well as a lot of social pressures or hard emotions to deal with, which is very common at this age. The loud music and vibrant colors enhance this sense of stress and the overwhelming feelings that the main character might be experiencing. Overall, I believe that this opening scene was very fun to watch and relatable for some people i think still it is very original as well when showing a chaotic and dramatic event and overall genre.

Dead Poets Society (1989)

The Opening scene starts with a lighted candle and then I hear a conversation between 2 men who are then shown whispering something, they might be professors or priests. Then a group of boys are presented holding what seems to be flags or important pieces inside a church's room. They are all wearing a uniform. Important names of the film are given. Then the doors open and the boys walk outside of the room in a line. The colors are very cold and simple, there isn't any vibrant color or loud unusual sound. The boys walk down the stairs into a very large room full of people and they are all wearing cold dark colors, making it all seem very serious and formal since they are in a church. Then, after a man talks, a band of students behind him starts to play a song. The man is holding a lighted candle, which he uses to light the candle that a kid in front of him is holding, then among the other kids besides him, the candles are lightened. People around applause. The man asks the public students that a couple of years before, some boys were asked the question of what are the four pillars, and suddenly everyone in the public stood up.

When analyzing this film's opening, I infer that the main characters aren't introduced in these very first minutes, in fact, I believe this is a prequel scene to who the main characters are and the conflict that evolves around them, which then will create a growing plot. The cold tones wide rooms and the multitude of people, make it all feel very antique and sort of uncomfortable to watch. I believe this serves to represent how kids who are part of religious schools are raised, and how strict and even scary the principals, teachers, or priests can end up being. I believe also that the sound and voice tone of the men enhance this dramatic feeling of confusion and unusualness.

In conclusion, I consider that all of the 3 opening scenes are well at showing what my group and I are interested in. I believe that the "drama" genre mixed with some "coming of age" characteristics was well implemented. I consider that the conflicts and emotions expressed through dialogue that is essential through the dramatic genre were developed in all three opening films. In general, as I investigate deeper on what our project could be about, the more excited and happy I get.

2 Possible Genre Choices

As we dive deeper into this Portfolio Project journey, it is time to consider the various options for the genre we will choose for our film opening video.

When considering which genre options to research and review, I have considered some factors such as to be original and stand out. I want to create an unusual story that connects well with the chosen genre. I want my project to feature creative settings, wardrobe, and dialogue, so I want to select a genre that embodies these elements. I plan to organize my project thoroughly, ensuring that every step in choosing the film genre is feasible within the resources we have. I view this Portfolio project as a challenge to identify resources and solutions, and I want to select a genre that represents that. I also want to draw inspiration from some of my favorite films and genres.

Comedy
Comedy is the "type of drama or other art form the chief object of which, according to modern notions, is to amuse. It is contrasted on the one hand with tragedy, and on the other with farce, burlesque, and other forms of humorous amusement."

Some of its characteristics include

Everyday situations: One of the main characteristics of comedies is that they usually include humor that comes from everyday experiences. This gives viewers a sense of recognition while it also allows them to laugh at the exaggeration of the situation. The contrast between what is expected and what occurs often provides the reason for the humor. A sense of suspense and surprise, are also crucial aspects of comedy.
Provide themes and morals: Although the main purpose of comedies is to make people laugh, they can also be used to share a message or express knowledge. Sitcoms, or humor-focused television programs, have been the most common comedies. Sitcoms frequently center on a main cast of characters who encounter numerous difficulties and setbacks throughout the series. Stand-up comedy, sketch comedy, and improv comedy are constantly showing either important themes or morals of the story.
Exaggerate: To make people laugh, they frequently exaggerate or develop absurd scenarios. This can be done to make fun of a certain topic or to produce a more exaggerated sense of humor, among other things. For whatever reason, this kind of content frequently intends to make the audience laugh.
Fast plot development: Comedy usually moves quickly, which keeps viewers interested. This may be a result of fast and simple jokes or the frequent use of physical humor. For whatever reason, it's obvious that comedies are meant to keep viewers entertained all the way through.

Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls is a great example of a comedy movie because incorporates humor through everyday high school situations, important themes such as the effects of gossip and toxic relationships, exaggeration of situations, and fast plot development. The film humorously portrays relatable experiences such as the development of an "American high school cafeteria", peer pressure, and teenage drama, showing the contrast between expectations and foolish outcomes. Regardless of its comical atmosphere, it emphasizes the dangers of superficiality and gossip while showing important lessons about friendship, social acceptance, and personal development. With silly examples like the "Burn Book" and the portrayal of a school fight as a wild animal fight, exaggeration takes place in the movie. The plot moves quickly, has memorable moments and clever dialogue, and entertains viewers while making messages about society.

Hot Pursuit (2015)

A great example of another comedy film is Hot Pursuit, The movie shows a situation in which a professional police officer and an impulsive witness must work together to survive a crazy and dangerous journey. It demonstrates in different ways the importance of friendship, female empowerment, and trust even with its comical tone. Exaggerated situations that keep viewers laughing, like crazy car chases, creating fake identities, and silly misunderstandings, are what make the comedy so successful. It is a humorous and captivating experience because of its fast plot development, quick but clever jokes, and scenes with action and adrenaline. The movie follows stereotypical beliefs at first, however, among its many plot twists, it shows another side of common beliefs and dives deeper into societal and cultural stereotypes.

Their decisions influence their characters and use the plot, particularly Allie's conflict between doing what she wants to do and living up to her family's expectations. The tension builds as viewers watch the couple's challenges, separation, and eventual reunion thanks to the story's slow plot development. As both characters struggle with regret, longing, and time passing, the movie deals with internal conflict. The Notebook illustrates the depth and emotional intensity that define a great drama film, with its character development and the deep significance of love, loss, and memory.

La La Land (2016)

La La Land's primary conflict centers on the relationship and aspirations of Mia and Sebastian, who are stuck between preserving their love for one another and pursuing their own goals. Their journey is defined by the decisions and sacrifices they make as the plot develops, emphasizing the conflict between love and professional success. From Sebastian's wish to preserve traditional jazz to Mia's auditions and self-doubt, the film's developing plot lets audiences observe the characters' challenges. As the protagonists struggle against both their fears and societal pressures, internal and external conflicts are shown throughout the story. The audience can relate to their aspirations and heartbreak because of their complex personalities. La La Land shows the emotional complexity and depth of love, sacrifice, and ambition.

Transition to the Portfolio Project

As the course progresses, so do the projects. Although the projects have been demanding and rigorous, I have had a wonderful time developing various skills and I have had the opportunity to expand my creativity and imagination, thinking outside the box and digging deep into my ideas. Throughout this course, I have also been able to discover wonderful and creative people, with whom I have been able to resonate our ideas and perspectives about our projects. I consider that throughout this course I have been able to understand my strengths and improve academic skills such as writing, research, and critical thinking. However, as time goes by, we are getting nearer to the final project of this course, which is the Portfolio Project. As an introduction, for the previous class lessons, crucial characteristics of this project have been explained and developed.

First, with the implementation of a Nearpod presentation, various details that should be taken into account about the project were given, such as an established tone, genre, credits, and purpose. These are the notes I took from that presentation.

The Nearpod also included samples of various film openings, my favorites were the ones of Lady Bird and Emma. I consider it very interesting when there is original music implemented, as well as some comedy details in actions or conversations. In the following class, the Cambridge Portfolio Project Directions were given, where notes were taken and we were able to ask the teacher about concerns and questions about the project. We were also presented with some previous Portfolio Projects Film Openings of previous students which I found very original and entertaining. These are the notes I took.

Overall, I am really excited about starting this project and once again letting my imagination and creativity flow. I can't wait for the following weeks that are coming.

Music Marketing Project

For the music marketing project, we worked in groups of four. Given the assigned music genre, R&B, and previous research on its most prominent artists, history, companies, marketing, and distribution, we were instructed to create a marketing campaign for a new music artist/group to build the brand from the bottom up and a marketing campaign to introduce the musician(s) to the public.

First, given all the different activities we had to cover, as a group, we decided to create a schedule including the different parts of the project and how to strategically organize our time to successfully complete our project.

Then, we received a folder including 3-4 songs representing the R&B genre, and based on our options, we chose the song Coming Home by Leon Bridges to represent the first single released by the artist/group since we considered that the song's lyrics, ambiance, and melody were the most representative of the music genre. Once we had selected our song, we decided to develop the artist around the style and the message perceived from our song. Therefore, we decided that our music project would consist of a band of three female members called The Brokers, and we decided that the overall aesthetic representation of the band would evolve around the mixture of old-fashioned styles as well as modern music, as well as making the brand's representative colors orange and black based on our emotions and sensations perceived from the song.

Afterward, we discussed further the band's identity, target audience, and marketing strategies. We decided that the names of the band members would be Ann Marie (lead singer), Deborah Collin (pianist), and Kiara Willis (trumpet player). We decided that our target audience would be mostly young individuals (mostly females), teenagers, and people between the ages of 18 and 24. The music production has a representation of what could be identified as music from previous decades, with organic sounds combined with some technological and futuristic concepts of the modern age, giving more urban vibes, which, based on our research, is mostly common in younger audiences.

Subsequently, we decided to come up with all the marketing strategies, digital and non-digital, for our band. The band will release their first single and music video on YouTube since anyone with an account can upload content, and there is no charging fee for it. YouTube's algorithm prioritizes the content for audiences who are interested in similar music. The music video will successfully work as a marketing strategy since it is a combination of a promotional and storytelling style; therefore, it showcases the band and has symbolic visuals paired with the song's lyrics. To strategically plan the visuals and video shots, we created a storyboard to properly create it.

Furthermore, we shot the different scenes for the music video, including promotional and storytelling.

Lastly, the band will create social media accounts on popular and relevant apps such as TikTok, Instagram, and X. The band will also create a webpage to properly share relevant information and upcoming releases. The members constantly upload content and information, and based on the algorithm, their audience will increase. The band will also do live presentations on commonly visited places such as restaurants or bars over time, and over time, the band might as well be the opening act for various artists that are relevant to the music industry and the R&B music genre. We decided that the band would do different collaborations with small brands that align with the essence and the aesthetic of the band, such as. H&M, Urban Outfitters, and Addidas.

The Science Behind Science - Fiction successfulness

What is Science Fiction?

Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) is a genre that concentrates on the future and examines how science and technology could change human life. An interesting fact that differentiates science fiction from other genres is that its targeted audience's characteristics have a very wide spectrum. Still, there are some common trends among the audience, such as ages 45 to 65. Most of the audience are males and are generally wealthier than the traditional people.

Content:

A common characteristic among Sci-Fi films is the representation of common rhetorical questions among the audience. This refers to the personal or famous theories that might be very common in society but don't have a specific answer at the moment. Such topics include time travel and a voyage between physical magnifying laws such as space and time manipulation with the help of advanced technology that might be nonexistent or complex to create in reality. Ex: An interesting example is the Avengers: Endgame film when the main characters reunite to go back to the past to solve the biggest conflict of the plot with the uncertainty of the final result of their decisions. The majority of the film demonstrates how quantum time travel and science could save humanity. Causing the audience to wonder about all the infinite possible outcomes that the movie might have had.

Extraterrestrial life and the situation of getting to know or discovering the existence of another living species is another common characteristic among Science Fiction films. However, there might be different outcomes of these situations, either positive or negative. Some films have presented how a human can create a deep connection among extraterrestrial beings and the existence of a friendship with unknown living beings. Ex: A clear example of these interactions is the movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which provides the audience a much more positive outcome. Between a boy and an extraterrestrial being,

The themes of being untrusted to technology and the magnifying and crescent power of artificial intelligence are also commonly reinforced throughout the films. The danger of how advanced and intelligent technology can affect human safety and become uncontrollable even for humans is shown. Enhancing the conflict of human vs technology. Ex: The Avengers: Age of Ultron film describes how even the most intelligent and calculated scientists or people around the world's creations can turn against them and become uncontrollable even for them. The main conflict of the film is when a human creation with good intentions turns against its mentor.

These films usually address societal problems such as political, economic, and scientific issues, centering on what the future would be like if society continued to coexist under these rules and the consequences of the desire to reach perfection by violating ethical universal rules, commonly presented through conflicts between humanity and their technological inventions.

Production Techniques:

In addition, the Science Fiction production techniques work together to create a futuristic ambiance and sentiment towards the audience. Due to this purpose, visual effects are usually implemented to impose the futuristic idea and environment on the audience. Science fiction films implement a formal design since the usage of a futuristic aesthetic is prioritized. The lighting technique used is mostly high-key light since it is intended to represent a clear and direct image of the situation presented during each scene. When it comes to set design, the use of robotic objects and technology around the characters and settings creates a symbolism of futuristic and a sense of innovation and causes an astonishing feeling among the audience. The use of cool, neutral, and pastel colors, such as light green and blue, emphasizes the sense of seriousness and sleekness to support the overall futuristic ambiance.

Ex: The movie Ex Machina follows some of these rules, implementing a more serious tone.
